STAR Detector Upgrade

Clean tent design

2017

I designed the clean tent in Autodesk Inventor. I carefully selected each material and part based on strength, cost, and reliability. I conducted hand analysis and met with other employees to determine which parts  were optimal for both assembly and function of the tent.

The tent is designed with Unistrut steel struts cut to specifically chosen lengths. It sits on castors for mobility and features a top-hatch and two side vestibules for entry.

The clean tent is wrapped with plastic to keep out dust and minimize external air flow. It was necessary to ensure an effective iTPC replacement operation on the STAR detector at BNL's relativistic heavy-ion collider (RHIC). The iTPC is the inner time projection chamber, which maps the resulting positions vs time of particles that result from high-energy gold nuclei collisions.

Replacement tool indicator mounts

I designed the 1st tool designed to give the iTPC sector replacement tool an accurate vertical positioning system. Machined from stock aluminum, slotted for a dial indicator.

I designed the 2nd tool to give the iTPC sector replacement tool an accurate rotational positioning system. Machined from stock aluminum, slotted for an electronic protractor.
